The Brooklyn Nets are hiring Kevin Ollie as an assistant coach, a league source confirmed to The Athletic on Saturday. ESPN was first to report the hire. Here’s what you need to know:

Backstory

Ollie, a four-year point guard and two-time captain during his time at UConn, played in 124 games for the Huskies, averaging 6.7 points and 5.0 assists. He spent 13 seasons in the NBA with multiple teams, entering the league as an undrafted free agent.

He was named the coach of his alma mater in 2012, replacing legendary coach Jim Calhoun, who Ollie spent two seasons under as an assistant and who coached Ollie during his collegiate playing days. In Ollie’s second season at the helm (2013-14), he led the Huskies to a 32-8 record and their fourth NCAA championship in 15 years. Ollie was fired in 2018 amid an NCAA investigation into possible recruiting violations. He later sued the school for wrongful termination and eventually reached a settlement of $3.9 million last September.
